The Population and Sustainabilty Network seeks to raise understanding of population issues in policy planning through targeted research initiatives, as outlined below:

High population increase can have many negative effects on economic development, poverty alleviation and the natural environment. The research projects outlined below aim to improve understanding of the dynamics of population growth in the 21st Century. It is hoped that the findings from the research will help to remove barriers that inhibit debate and prevent action.

Population and Climate Change

There are clear indications that growth in human population plays an important role in the process of climate change.

However there is a need for the linkage to be clearly identified and proven, to the satisfaction of scientific, political and media opinion.

Working Group on the Impact of Population Growth

A central activity of the Network is the promotion of a research programme to identify and assess all aspects of the economic, social and environmental costs of population increase - particularly when these aspects may hinder poverty alleviation.

The Emerging Myth of "Age Dependency"

Growing concern is being expressed in some quarters about supposedly rising levels of “age dependency” in several developed countries in Europe and other advanced economies, where populations are stagnating.
